The world's smallest nano "hula hoop" came out in only 300 milliseconds

Scientists have long dreamed of being able to manufacture nano-scale micro-robots. This dream is now realized. Many nano-robots have become part of our lives. Nano-science and technology can produce molecular-level mechanical components. Currently, Japanese scientists are developing a rotor nanodevice, a movable component can be rotated around an axis, which is very similar to a rotating hula hoop, and is the world's smallest nano hula hoop.

Trying to observe molecular-level rotational motion is a very difficult task, and now researchers at Osaka University and Kyoto University in Japan have made challenging attempts. The head of the research team, Akira Harada and colleagues of the research team took "snapshots" of individual molecular rotor devices in motion, and they published the relevant research report in the German international advanced academic journal "Applied Chemistry" (Angewandte Chemie) ) Magazine.

The researchers chose rotaxane as the research object. This is a two-part molecular structure system: one rod-shaped molecule is covered with another ring-shaped molecule like a hula hoop, and a rod-shaped molecule is blocked at the end of the device. Thereby avoiding the shedding of ring molecules. They fixed rod-shaped molecules on a glass support to observe the rotation of this "hula hoop" on the sleeve rod. They connected the fluorescent chain on the side of the ring molecule, which was easy to observe when rotating.

In order to observe the "hula hoop" rotation on rod-shaped molecules, the researchers used a method called "defocused large-area total internal reflection fluorescence technology microscope", which gave snapshot images of individual rotating molecules in the fluorescence jet mode. If such "hula hoop" ring molecules are at rest, these fluorescent patterns may calculate the direction of their fluorescence release, and thus may calculate the orientation of the ring molecules, which are retained in each snapshot. However, if the ring molecules are in a rotating state, the sprayed pattern will not reveal the orientation of the ring molecules.

The researchers confirmed that if in a dry state, the rotaxane molecules do not rotate, but when they are wet, they can clearly see the rapid rotation and swinging movement of these molecules. The hula hoop ring molecule rotates faster than the shutter speed of the photo shoot, and its 360-degree rotation can be completed within 300 milliseconds.
