Progress in ionic liquid modified silica gel liquid chromatography stationary phase

Under the support of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the “Hundred Talents Program” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Key Laboratory of Northwestern Characteristic Plant Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Qiu Hongliang, “Hundred Talents Program” project team fixed in imidazolium ionic liquid modified silica gel liquid chromatography A series of progress has been made in phase research.

Ionic liquids are a class of non-molecular molten salts composed of cations and anions, usually in a liquid state at room temperature. Thanks to its multiple advantages, such as high stability, electrical conductivity, strong solubility and modification, ionic liquids have shown high application value and economic benefits in many fields. Based on the preparation of imidazolium ionic liquid modified silica gel in heterogeneous system, the team synthesized imidazolium cation embedded C18 stationary phase and imidazolium cation spacer C18 stationary phase, and verified the position of the imidazole cation distribution on the chromatographic performance by mathematical model. The different effects of this research were published in Talanta (2014, 126, 177-184).

The researchers also explored a new ionic liquid stationary phase preparation route, the formation of a urea-based functionalized ionic liquid in a homogeneous medium, significantly improved the bonding of ionic liquid on the surface of silica gel, and has a strong Designability can be applied to different chromatographic modes by changing the surface properties of the substituents to control the silicon spheres (see the figure below). The results are published in RSC Advances (2014, 4, 34654-34658) and Journal of Chromatography A (2014, 1365, 148-155).

On the basis of relevant research work, the team summarized and analyzed the overall status of the ionic liquid modified silica gel stationary phase, and comprehensively discussed the preparation methods and application fields used so far. The related work was published in Trends in Analytical Chemistry ( 2014, 53, 60-72). This review highlights the application value of ionic liquids in liquid chromatography, and provides some help for researchers to better understand ionic liquids. It also has certain guiding significance for the preparation of liquid chromatography stationary phases.

The team further extended the variety and application range of separation and analysis materials by multiple action mechanisms through a series of studies on imidazolium ionic liquid modified silica gel liquid chromatography stationary phase.
