Research progress on the detection of PCBs by bio-modified nanomaterials in the Institute of Technical Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Recently, the Laboratory of Radiation and Environmental Toxicology, Institute of Technical Biology, Hefei Institute of Material Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed a new method for rapidly modifying nanomaterials with biomolecules. The method is easy to operate, takes a short time, and has good recognition specificity and sensitivity.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), as the most important persistent organic pollutants at present, are widely present in the environment due to their stable and difficult to degrade characteristics, and have been proved to be closely related to the occurrence of neurodevelopment, immunity and cancer diseases . Many methods have been developed for PCB detection, such as gas chromatography (GC / HRMS), electron capture detection (GC-CED), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC / PDA), and immunoassay.

With the support of the National Nano Special Project "Biochemical Modification of Nanomaterial Surfaces and Selective Enrichment of POPs", the Laboratory of Radiation and Environmental Toxicology has carried out rapid analysis and detection of PCBs with new biological nanosensors. They used SELEX technology to screen for aptamers specific to PCBs, and on this basis, they developed new methods for rapid modification of nanomaterials by biomolecules, and constructed gold nanoparticle sensors based on aptamers (Figure), their PCB77 The lowest detection concentration is 0.5 µg / L. The above method is easy to operate, time-consuming, and has good recognition specificity and sensitivity, which lays a certain foundation for the development of rapid trace biological nano-detection methods. In the next step, they will further develop the rapid detection of trace PCBs in complex systems.
