3D printing human organs broke through the first level: successfully printed artificial blood vessels!

Current medical techniques can only recreate the skin's surface thickness (the dermis and epidermis) no more than 200 microns, and several for subcutaneous tissue. The millimeter-thick intact skin system cannot be reconstructed because it involves vascular tissue and no nutrient supply of blood vessels. Artificial skin over 200 microns cannot survive.

To this end, the interdisciplinary team led by the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology undertook the EU project "ArtiVasc 3D" to develop 3D printing technology for the manufacture of artificial blood vessels.

The key to 3D printing for the manufacture of blood vessels is to find suitable printed materials that are suitable for the physical properties and biocompatibility of the graft vessel, must be compatible with the endothelial and capillary surrounding tissue, and are suitable for 3D printing. To meet these conditions, the researchers used a combination of inkjet printing and stereolithography. Using this combination approach, they solved the key technology for printing porous, multi-forked artificial blood vessels that are only 20 microns thick.

The multi-fork structure of the artificial blood vessel is printed in accordance with the actual vascular structure by means of a computer simulation design. The material used to print the blood vessels is an acrylate-based synthetic polymer. This material allows the surface of blood vessels to be distributed with many micropores hundreds of microns in diameter. Using this material, the researchers successfully printed artificial blood vessels similar in function to real blood vessels for the first time.

This technology has brought good news to patients with severe skin damage such as extensive burns, as well as to patients undergoing skin reconstruction or revascularization due to surgical trauma. The researchers said that the technology is not limited to printing artificial blood vessels, but also can be used as a toolbox to select different materials, geometries and sizes for the manufacture of a variety of human tissues or human organs, and the future of medical applications is very broad. .
