3D printing subway station will debut in London

In the past, when architects, urban planners, real estate developers, etc. showed or explained their designs, they often used hand-made scale models, which was time-consuming and costly. Nowadays, with the advent of 3D printing , this technology has quickly gained popularity among architects for the simple reason that, first of all, it is a natural extension of CAD design, which is easy for designers to master; secondly, 3D printed architectural models are not only It's faster and cheaper than hand-made, and it's more accurate and better quality.

Recently, the London Transport Authority (TFL), which manages most of London's transportation systems, commissioned 3D printing company Hobs Reprographics to create a 3D model of their Victorian metro station upgrade plan for them to be such as contractors, nearby residents and Stakeholders such as local authorities explain.

This is a challenging project, and the design team needs to clearly and accurately present the entire underground multi-level transportation network, tunnels, houses, public cable lines, etc., and the relationship between these elements. In addition, the design team hopes that this six-part model can also be used as a reference for construction workers at the construction stage.

To accurately create this model, the design team used a laser to scan an existing Victoria subway station and used the captured millions of data points to generate an accurate 3D model of the entire station layout. After that, the design team used this as a frame of reference and compared and measured the design of the Victoria subway station upgrade plan, and finally created a 3D model of the expected design, and finally reduced it in a certain proportion and printed it in 3D.

In order to show many details of the planning and construction of this subway station - such as cables, pipes, passenger passages, ticket offices, etc. - designers use vivid colors in the 3D model to distinguish these functions. To improve resolution, the design team used selective laser sintering (SLS) technology for 3D printing.

To further illustrate the design of the subway station in the context of the surrounding area, the designers put the model in a box, placed along with the streets around the surface and the iconic buildings.

Needless to say, the 3D printing model for the "Victoria Station Upgrade Program" has achieved quite good results because it is very intuitive and allows visitors to see at a glance, which is very conducive to display and communication. To this end, the TFL is brewing the same 3D printing model for other subway stations.

“The sharing of 3D design is as important as the creation. The project team has many years of experience in 3D printing,” said Paul Kick of TFL. “The entire 3D printing model produced by Hobs effectively demonstrates the upgrade of the Victoria Station in the underground, and Passing on the challenge of our customer service, people often don’t realize it before."
