The principle of color matching and color perception

Subjective factors

Figure 3: The relationship between color and color

The two pairs of two-color combinations show how a powerful background color alters the visual perception of adjacent colors. The middle and upper pairs of the middle color blocks are the same color, but due to the different backgrounds, the colors give people different feelings.

There are many uncontrollable subjective factors that face the color matching. The first is the observing ability of the observer. There are over 50 observation defects that have been confirmed, including age, gender, inherent personality traits, health, disease, nutrition, and lack of vitamins. Therefore, we simply cannot understand whether an individual has the same ability to observe colors as we do.

Two different Munsell test models can be used to determine the sensitivity of an individual to chromatic aberration. More complicated tests require the observer to arrange 300 color blocks in a particular color palette in the order of increasing color. After completion, flip the color wheel over and analyze the numbered blocks to see if they are aligned. Correctly, you will find that there are some wrong alignments and point out the corresponding color perception problems. A simple test uses only 100 color patches, at least those color patches associated with color matching should be selected for testing.

The observer's emotional state is another subjective factor that affects color matching. The greater the fluctuation of a person's mood, the greater the difference in making decisions about colors. Some of the emotional factors that affect color are related to the perception of color and are also related to cultural backgrounds. This is not related to "why?" but it is important to keep in mind that emotions are crucial to determining the color of colors. The judgments made under the more heated emotional state and the judgments made under the peaceful state of mind will be very different.

Another subjective factor that needs attention is the inability to judge the color of a color in isolation, and should be considered in conjunction with the colors around it. When the same color is silhouetted against different backgrounds, there will be some drift in the hue. This is called "simultaneous contrast." The larger the background, the higher the degree of influence on the foreground color.

When we pick a color, we often encounter such problems. When we look at a small color block, we feel that the color is very good, but when combined with other colors, it is not so ideal, so we choose the color It is time to comprehensively consider various factors that affect the sense of color.

in conclusion

As a printing practitioner, we should not only believe what we see, and our own judgment. When determining the color of a color, the more factors that are considered, the closer it becomes to reality. If we know with great confidence that we have considered various factors and do our best to get the perfect match, then the entire matching process will be very smooth.
